Merz announced the end of the former world order
![]() The old world order that existed in the West for the last 80 years and in the East for 35 years has come to an end. This was announced on November 17 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference of the Suddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) newspaper in Berlin. "We know for sure that the order that we have known in the West for the last 80 years, and in the East for 35 years, that this world order has come to an end now — in these days, weeks, months, today, on this day when we meet here," he said. The broadcast of the speech is published on the newspaper's website. The Chancellor stressed that the formation of a new world order is possible only together with Germany's European neighbors. He noted the unprecedented challenges facing Germany, including the conflict in Ukraine, relations with China, and trade disputes with the United States. Merz also noted the "deep split in the Atlantic," which, in his words, calls into question almost all the principles of transatlantic relations that have been formed over the past decades. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on September 24 that the post-Cold War world order was over, and it would take time to establish a new one, the nature of which is still unclear. Stubb stressed that it would take from five to 10 years for the "dust" from the collapse of the old routine, which takes place during a period of changing dynamics, to settle. Prior to that, on June 21, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, responding to a question from Izvestia on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025), noted that the world is experiencing the development of multipolarity. According to her, Russia and the People's Republic of China (PRC) are active players on the world stage. All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
