The Georgian Parliament voted to return the article "Treason" abolished under Saakashvili
![]() The Georgian Parliament voted to return the article "Treason" to the Criminal Code, which was abolished in 2007 under President Mikheil Saakashvili. The executive secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said that the abolition of this article in the Criminal Code was dictated by the former authorities' awareness of the responsibility for future criminal activity. The article "Treason" in the Criminal Code of Georgia provides for punishment for officials concluding unconstitutional international treaties, encroachment on external security, disclosure of state secrets, espionage, sabotage, conspiracy or rebellion with the aim of overthrowing the constitutional order. The Georgian opposition believes that the return of the article "Treason" to the Criminal Code is necessary for the authorities for the announced trial of the former ruling party "United National Movement" and its leader Saakashvili. For this purpose, a temporary investigative commission has already been created in the parliament to establish the facts of the criminal activity of the former authorities. |
