Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 4,930

The death toll from the June 24 dual earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 4,930, Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said Thursday.

Another 6,462 people were rescued alive from the rubble, while 856 buildings were damaged, including 190 that collapsed, mostly in the hard-hit state of La Guaira, according to figures released by Rodriguez on X.

The disasters left 17,907 people homeless, with 21,210 staying in 107 temporary camps. More than 128,000 families have received government assistance.

Authorities have recorded 1,308 aftershocks since the two main earthquakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck 39 seconds apart.

The government also deployed more than 1,200 health workers in La Guaira to prevent disease outbreaks in temporary camps.
