Upstate mom who gave birth to 15-pound baby girl speaks out

The upstate mom who gave birth to one of New York’s biggest babies — an adorable 15-pound-5-ounce bundle of joy — compared the grueling delivery to being smashed by a truck.

“I felt like I was hit by two tractor-trailers,” wiped-out mama Joy Buckley of Corning told The Post Monday. “It was pretty violent. She got stuck under my ribcage.”

It took three doctors, a medical “vacuum” and a C-section to deliver 23.2-inch Harper Buckley at Arnot Odgen Medical Center in Elmira last Tuesday, she said.

Her bundle of joy — who is roughly the size of a 6-month-old — suffered some trauma and was placed in neonatal intensive care.

The infant was breathing with the help of an oxygen machine Monday, and doctors said she is expected to be released from the hospital soon, according to Buckley.

The stay-at-home mom has some recovering to do herself.

“I’m up moving around, and I can walk now. I’m so relieved to be done feeling that [physical] pressure,” said Buckley — adding there was “enough amniotic fluid for two people.”

She and her husband, Norman, are exhausted but thrilled with their new daughter. “We are so in awe of her,” she said. “We’ve been able to hold her. She’s got a pretty happy demeanor.”

Two years ago, Buckley — who herself is 5-foot-8 and 210 pounds — gave birth to an 11-pound boy with a C-section after struggling for years with infertility issues, she said.

Both she and Norman’s families have a history of monster babies up to 16 pounds, she said, though some of those infants grew up to be petite.

As for Harper? “She may end up with a linebacker build, just like me,” Buckley said.

Officials from the New York Health Department, which tracks newborn baby weight data, were looking into whether baby Buckley is the state’s largest ever, a spokeswoman told The Post Monday. There were no reports immediately available of a bigger baby being born in the Empire State.
