Borrel: Under EU law, no Member State can unilaterally suspend another’s participation in Schengen

Former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that no EU member state has the right to unilaterally exclude another country from the Schengen Agreement or suspend its participation in it.

"After thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco this week, Italy threatened to “suspend Schengen with Spain.”
It just can’t.
Under EU law, no Member State can unilaterally suspend another’s participation in Schengen," he wrote on X, commenting on the statements of the Italian authorities about their readiness to suspend the Schengen agreement on free border crossing with Spain due to the flow of illegal migrants to Ceuta.
