NATO weighs role in securing Strait of Hormuz

NATO may play a direct role in ensuring safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday, reflecting that the transatlantic alliance is planning on a military level.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Institute in Washington, Rutte said a coalition of 34 countries has begun detailed discussions at a military level on a potential Hormuz mission. “If NATO can help, of course, NATO is there… but we will proceed step by step, as such a move requires consensus among all allies,” he noted.
