Nato officials restrict intelligence to US over Trump threats

Sources from both sides of the Atlantic warn that the US-UK security relationship is at its lowest ebb since the 1950s, putting European security at risk.

Donald Trump’s proposed takeover of Greenland is causing rifts inside Nato that have resulted in officials withholding intelligence sharing with the US.

But Trump’s ambitions to acquire Greenland for national security reasons is destroying trust and tearing long-standing agreements apart, sources have said.

A senior Nato insider told The i Paper: “It is creating tensions and distrust between European and US colleagues in Nato. American officials are no longer speaking openly amid fears the information will reach the White House and be used in pursuit of Greenland.”

A British intelligence source called the deterioration of relations with the White House "unprecedented" and noted that Britain had lost its status as the main partner of the United States in intelligence sharing, turning into "just a part of Europe" in Washington's eyes.
