France to Build Drones in Ukraine as Defense Ties Deepen, Zelenskyy Says
![]() Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that French defense companies have agreed to begin manufacturing drones inside Ukraine—a major step forward in expanding joint arms production between Kyiv and Paris, Zelenskyy wrote on X on July 21. “We are ready to expand joint defense production. There is a decision by French companies to begin manufacturing drones in Ukraine—and this is highly valuable,” Zelenskyy said following a meeting in Kyiv with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot. The two officials also discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, soldier training, and outcomes of the recent Ramstein-format meetings. Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for air defense systems amid ongoing Russian aerial attacks. The talks also covered tightening sanctions against Russia and Ukraine’s accession negotiations with the European Union. Zelenskyy thanked French President Emmanuel Macron and Minister Barrot for their continued support, including the decision to supply Mirage fighter jets. “Thank you for your solidarity with our people,” he said. Earlier, Jean-Noël Barrot, French Minister, arrived in Kyiv as the guest of honor at the Ambassador’s Conference.
