Biya announced that he will run in the presidential elections, which will be held on October 12 of this year. Addressing the country's citizens, the president called on them not to doubt his determination to serve the interests of the people. Biya has led the country for more than 40 years. His predecessor, the first president of Cameroon, Ahmadou Babatour Ahijo, resigned in 1982 for health reasons. Biya has been elected head of state seven times.
