Germany and Ukraine Sign €2.2 Billion Defense Deal for Long-Range Weapons Production
![]() German and Ukrainian Defense Ministers Boris Pistorius and Rustem Umerov signed an agreement in Berlin to finance the production of long-range Ukrainian-made weapons. The total value of the contract with the German company Diehl Defense, which manufactures IRIS-T air defense systems and associated missiles, amounts to €2.2 billion ($2.38 billion). This is stated in the official press release of the German government on May 28. The contract is part of a new €5 billion (about $5.4 billion) military aid package approved by the German Bundestag. The package also includes the supply of air defense systems, ammunition, small arms, medical equipment, and funding for the maintenance infrastructure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Ukrainian territory. The decision to strengthen support for Ukraine follows recent large-scale Russian missile attacks that caused civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. In addition to the IRIS-T systems, Germany will deliver artillery shells, various types of ammunition, ground-based systems, and small arms. The package also includes funding for repair centers in Ukraine through a joint venture involving defense companies from both countries. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin on May 28 for talks aimed at strengthening German support for Ukraine and advancing efforts toward a ceasefire. According to German government spokesperson Stefan Cornelius, the visit focuses on Germany’s ongoing military and political assistance, as well as joint initiatives to facilitate a negotiated end to the war. |
