India blocks flow of Indus River towards Pakistan
![]() The Indian authorities decided to suspend the 1960 Indus River Treaty, thereby stopping the supply of water from the stream to Pakistan. This was reported on April 24 by the ANI News agency, citing a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry. Pakistan had earlier stated that any attempt by India to stop the flow of water from the Indus River or change its course would be considered an act of war. On April 24, it also became known that Pakistan had closed its airspace to India. In turn, New Delhi announced that it was suspending the issuance of visas to Pakistanis and canceling those already issued. Relations between the two countries were strained on April 22 after a terrorist attack in the Indian-controlled territory of Kashmir. Indian authorities had stated that the perpetrators of the crime had links to Pakistan. According to official Indian sources, two of the three attackers were Pakistani citizens. |
