Media: Syria foils coup plot by ex-officers
![]() A coup attempt allegedly orchestrated by a group of former military officers has been thwarted in Syria, according to the country’s transitional authorities. The head of the interior ministry in Syria’s transitional government, Anas Khattab said that security forces had successfully prevented an attempted coup, reports per TASS. “The conspirators’ plans were thwarted. Thanks to the efforts of our security agencies and the support of the people, the coup attempt is now a thing of the past,” Khattab said. He stated that the outcome of the security operation had been reviewed by intelligence services in coordination with the Ministry of Defence. In the wake of the alleged plot, authorities have decided to establish a special department to coordinate actions among security agencies in the pursuit of those involved. Khattab said the move aims to bolster the country’s security and stability. No further details were provided about those allegedly behind the attempt or when the operation took place. Notably, between March 6 and 10, security forces in Syria suppressed armed uprisings by supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad in the provinces of Latakia, Tartous, Hama, and Homs. The clashes resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people. |
