Police fatally shoot man described as mentally ill
A man described as mentally ill, who was fatally shot by police in Panorama City, was identified Tuesday. The shooting occurred about 8:45 a.m. Monday in the 9100 block of Kester Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Orbel Nazarians, 22, of Panorama City died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. LAPD Officer Drake Madison said officers responded to the area in response to a report of a “male with mental illness.” Arriving officers were confronted by a man later identified as Nazarians who was armed with a “16-inch, edged weapon,” Madison said. One report from the scene indicated Nazarians was armed with a machete. The officers tried to take Nazarians into custody using a stun gun and a beanbag weapon but were unsuccessful, leading to the shooting, Madison said. It was unclear how many officers fired. |
