Pope Francis' funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday.

The Vatican said the pope's funeral will be held at 10 a.m. local time.

The decision comes at cardinals meeting early Tuesday, while the conclave to elect a new pope will begin from May 5.

Until then, on April 23, from 9 a.m. local time, the remains of Pope Francis will be in St. Peter's Basilica, where those who wish can pay their last respects to the pontiff.

In his will, Pope Francis ordered that his funeral be held without excessive pomp, like the funeral of an ordinary Christian.
