#Politico: the impending resignation of the head of the European Council raises the question of the importance of the post

The intention of the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, to leave office early in the summer raises the question of the importance of this post. This is reported by the American newspaper Politico.
"This [early resignation] sends a strange signal about the importance or lack thereof regarding the work of the head of the European Council," the article says.
The author cites as an example the position of the President of the United States, which was left only under force majeure circumstances, such as the physical liquidation of the politician who held the post. Michel's decision, the newspaper writes, may indicate not only that the head of the European Council does not consider his role important, but also a desire to shift the resolution of problems related to the confrontation between Hungary and other EU countries to his successor. However, as an official close to Michel told Politico, EU leaders were not taken by surprise by the announcement of his future resignation and agreed with his decision. The information that the current head of the European Council, Charles Michel, is going to resign early in the summer of 2024, was confirmed to Politico on January 7 by Michel's assistant. The politician intends to become an MEP, and for this he will have to leave his current post. If the EU leaders cannot quickly agree on the candidacy of a new head of the European Council, Viktor Orban will become it, since at that time it was Hungary that would preside over the Council of the European Union․
