A painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold at auction in Hong Kong for $30 million

A painting by the American neo-expressionist artist and graffiti creator Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) went under the hammer in Hong Kong for $30 million. The organizers of the auction held the night before from the auction house Christie’s reported on Tuesday. “The lot was sold for 234,290,000 Hong Kong dollars [$30.1 million] and became the most expensive at the auction,” the organizers said. They specified that the estimated value of this work was $18-22 million. The buyer’s name was not disclosed. The last time this work went to auction in London in 2017 for $14.5 million. In 1987 (during the author’s lifetime) it sold for $23.1 thousand. In May 2017, another painting by Basquiat, which has no name, went under the hammer in New York for a record price for this artist – $110.5 million. |
