Success stories. 7 Armenian women in the worldwide science

Rusarminfo presented 7 brave Armenian women who are included in the worldwide science, and told their stories.

Ashkhen Hovakimyan (1854-1899) – known as Agnes Joaquim, she was a scientific worker in Great Britain and Singapore. She contributed to the establishment of the Singapore national symbol "The Vanda Miss Joaquim" in the end of the XIX century.

Zaruhi Qavaljyan (1877-1969) – was the first woman doctor and scientist in the Ottoman Empire. Graduating from Illinois State Medical University she returned to Adapazar, Turkey with her father and worked at the local hospital, simultaneously teaching at an American college. Later she moved to Istanbul.

Alenush Teryan (1920-2011) – was the first woman physicist in Iran. Tehrani-Armenian Alenush Teryan directed the Tehran Solar Observatory for many years, had numerous scientific discoveries and professed generations of Iranian scientists and astrophysicists.

Anna Kazanjian Longobardo (1928-pres.) – the first woman scientist in the US in the field of controlling unmanned aerial vehicles. In the 1960s she established the American “Saturn” rocket launcher.

Elizaveta Shahkhatuni (1911-2011) – a graduate of the Moscow Aviation University and the first woman aircraft designer in SSR. In 1940s she was the director of the СХА-1 (An-2, later got the name “kukuruznik”) biplane controlling sector. In 1955 her sector produced the An-8, then An-10 and later the An-1 biplanes.

Mary Papazian (1959-pres.) – the president of San Jose University in California since 2017. Previously she was the head of Southern Connecticut State University.

Karina Movsesyan – became the winner of the 29th European Union Contest for Young Scientists and received the title of the "youngest scientist of European Union". She has discovered a mechanism which prevents the development of cancer tumors.
